On July 8, Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering Co., Ltd. (NACKS) held a naming ceremony for the Ultramax 64,000 DWT bulk carrier “UM KURE,” built for Japanese shipowner Hinode Kaiun, at its new outfitting base in Nantong.

The “UM KURE” has an overall length of 199.90 meters, a width of 32.24 meters, a depth of 19.40 meters, and a full-load draft of 13.50 meters. With a gross tonnage of 36,452 tons and a deadweight of 64,133 tons, its cargo hold capacity reaches 81,432 cubic meters. The vessel is powered by a MAN B&W 6S50ME-C9.7-HPSCR diesel engine, achieving a speed of 13.8 knots and accommodating 25 crew members. It is classed by the Japanese classification society (NK) and sails under the Panamanian flag.

This flat-deck bulk carrier features a forecastle and five cargo holds capable of transporting goods such as grain, coal, and ore. Four 30-ton deck cranes are installed along the hull’s centerline between each hatch cover, enabling loading and unloading operations even in ports without cargo-handling facilities.

Additionally, the new vessel is equipped with an energy-efficient electronically controlled diesel main engine and incorporates technologies to enhance propulsion performance. These include propellers designed to improve efficiency, as well as Kawasaki-developed energy-saving technologies such as Kawasaki RBS-F and Kawasaki SDS-F. These improvements boost fuel efficiency and ensure compliance with the International Maritime Organization’s Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) Phase 3 requirements.
