HNLMS Johan de Witt returned to Den Helder after 2.5 months with its crew of approximately 200. The naval vessel operated in the North Sea, Baltic Sea, Atlantic Ocean and Irish Sea in preparation for NATO missions.

This took place within Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1), one of NATO’s four permanent naval forces. HNLMS Johan de Witt served as the flagship.

Destroying drones

The crew was available 24/7 for assignments from NATO headquarters in Northwood, UK. This included patrolling, but also training with allies and partners, such as off the coast of Portugal. Here, the aim was to detect and destroy drones both in the air and underwater in a timely manner.

The SNMG1 serves as a deterrent and to monitor and maintain security in maritime areas. Commander Arjen Warnaar will be in command of the international fleet throughout 2025, first from HNLMS Johan de Witt and now from HNLMS Van Amstel. From January onwards, Spain will provide the commander and the flagship.

Commemorative medal

The Johan de Witt crew received the International Missions Commemorative Medal for their participation in SNMG1.
