Oracle Becomes Part of HMM’s Technology Strategy

US technology giant Oracle will develop a next-generation IT system built on cloud-based infrastructure for South Korean ocean carrier line Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) as part of the shipping line’s project to expand into new technologies.

HMM has announced that it will also form a joint research lab with Oracle to study how systems such as blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT) and big data analytics can improve business processes and benefit the movement of ocean freight.

The carrier line will introduce a more robust IT service environment for both internal and external customers in 2020, which will markthe end of the three-yeardevelopment plan by the twelfth largest container shipping company.

As part of its technology strategy, HMM began a recruitment drive to add new IT personnel to its ranks in February 2018.

A HMM official stated: “The introduction of new IT technologies is now the key tomaritime competitiveness. Our IT assets will be an important factor in determining the futureof HMM.”
