Pacific nations, led by the Micronesian Center for Sustainable Transport (MCST), are preparing submissions to the IMO to ensure the body promotes a just and equitable transition in decarbonizing global shipping.
MCST Co-Director, Maria Sahib, emphasized that the 6PAC+ nations have a series of submissions being finalized with their scientific and legal experts to ensure that their countries, which bear the brunt of climate impacts, are not left behind in maritime transition.
The 6PAC+ alliance, which includes Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Palau, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu, is coordinating submissions due 5 September ahead of /ES.2 negotiations to take place in London 14-17 October. These talks will focus on adopting the Net Zero Framework, a set of measures designed to reduce emissions from international shipping.
The Pacific is advocating for the framework to provide a credible path to meet the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C target and for the Net Zero Fund to support Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs), rather than only wealthier nations.
