NorthPort, the main gateway for domestic cargo in the Philippines, operated by International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI), took a significant step towards more sustainable operations with the conversion of its rubber-tired gantries (RTG) to hybrid cranes.

Six RTGs were converted to hybrid by replacing their diesel generator sets with smaller generators and combining them with high-capacity, liquid-cooled battery systems. These now operate primarily on batteries, which are recharged by the smaller generator sets, reducing diesel consumption and maintenance needs.

The first batch of hybrid cranes is already in full operation, achieving a 49 percent reduction in carbon emissions and diesel consumption. This halves the terminal’s average annual carbon emissions, from 2,186 tons to approximately 1,109 tons.

Furthermore, NorthPort is expanding its fleet of hybrid RTGs with the acquisition of four new Mitsui hybrid units, whose delivery is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026.

“The adoption of hybrid technology underscores NorthPort’s commitment to environmental management, world-class port operations, and exceptional customer service,” ICTSI stated in a public announcement.
