The Polish government has announced plans for a $2.3 billion investment – approximately 16 billion kroner – in a new major container terminal project at Świnoujście, near the German border. It will handle three times as many teu as the Port of Aarhus.
The terminal will be part of what the government calls the most ambitious project in the port authority Szczecin-Świnoujście’s 75-year history.
The project involves the creation of 186 hectares of new land, three kilometers of quay, and a 17-meter-deep harbor basin.
The new container terminal will have the capacity to handle the world’s largest container ships and an annual throughput of up to 2 million teu, which is more than double that of Gothenburg and three times more than the Port of Aarhus.
The terminal will be able to accommodate three ships simultaneously, including two 400-meter vessels.
In addition to the port facility itself, new road and rail connections are planned, as well as green technology with shore power installations and zero-emission handling.
According to Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Arkadiusz Marchewka, the terminal will strengthen Poland’s position in the Baltic Sea region and secure revenue for the state for decades to come.
“This will not only be a port expansion, but a symbol of Poland’s maritime strength,” he stated, according to Maritime Executive.
