For the tenth consecutive year, Port Canaveral obtained the Green Marine certification, thus consolidating its environmental leadership and sustainable performance for a decade among deep-water ports. This achievement underscores the port’s constant commitment to implementing responsible environmental practices in all its operations, while continuously improving its environmental performance.
“Obtaining this international certification year after year reflects our ongoing commitment to operating responsibly and with respect for the natural resources that make our region such a special place,” stated Captain John Murray, Chief Executive Officer of Port Canaveral.
Bob Musser, Senior Director of Environment at Port Canaveral, added that “environmental responsibility is fundamental to everything we do. Green Marine encourages participants to continuously improve their environmental performance beyond regulatory requirements. Maintaining the certification demonstrates our commitment to measuring our performance, identifying opportunities for improvement, and, most importantly, implementing sustainable practices that benefit both our operations and the surrounding environment.”
Green Marine is an international voluntary environmental certification program that includes ports, seaways, terminal operators, shipyards, and shipowners. Port Canaveral has been a member since 2016, the year it obtained certification by meeting the organization’s rigorous environmental standards and performance criteria.
Participants are evaluated based on a series of performance indicators that go beyond regulatory compliance, including atmospheric emissions (such as greenhouse gases and air pollutants), aquatic ecosystems, community impact, community relations, environmental leadership, spill prevention and stormwater management, underwater noise, and waste management.
Certification requires annual self-assessments and, every two years, independent third-party verification to ensure accountability and continuous improvement.
Since obtaining Green Marine certification, Port Canaveral has maintained its position in the program by demonstrating continuous improvements and performance in multiple environmental categories, while driving initiatives that support long-term sustainability across all its operations.
