A Spanish delegation headed by the president of the Port Authority of Algeciras (APBA), Gerardo Landaluce, is attending the Global Gateway Forum 2025, where they will present the Green and Digital Corridor between Panama and the Port of Algeciras, a pioneering initiative driven by a Memorandum of Understanding that seeks to decarbonize container maritime traffic on one of the most strategic transoceanic lines, namely the route between the Canal and the Strait of Gibraltar.

In addition to Landaluce, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Panama, Carlos Guevara, and the Ambassador of Panama to the EU, Ángel Riera, will participate. The project not only aligns with Global Gateway, but also with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Net Zero Framework goal, the EU ETS, and the Fuel EU Maritime.

As explained by the president of the APBA, Gerardo Landaluce, “faithful to our Green Strategy, we promote coordinated investments for the supply of alternative fuels, such as biofuels, e-methanol, ammonia; the development of electrical connections for ships (OPS); as well as the digitalization of logistics and operational efficiency, guaranteeing a comprehensive and scalable approach towards climate-neutral maritime transport. These are measures we are already implementing, and with this project we will do so in parallel with our project partners in Panama.”

The progress of the feasibility study for the Green and Digital Corridor project between Panama and the Port of Algeciras, among other results, will lead to an estimated annual saving of 800,000 tons of CO2, equivalent to taking 400,000 vehicles off the road, which will be an example to continue leading the energy transition in the port maritime sector.

The Global Gateway Strategy is a shared European investment agenda of 300 billion euros in which the Port of Algeciras wants to be a key element to, together with Europe, achieve a transformative impact through the values of the Union.

Already last September, the Port Authority presented in Costa Rica the first of its initiatives integrated by the EU into the Global Gateway Strategy, the Digital Interoperability Project between the Central American Digital Trade Platform and the Port Community System of the Port of Algeciras, which aims to boost bi-regional trade exchange of fresh products between Spain and Central America.
