The Port of Gothenburg continues to consolidate its position as the main freight transport hub in the Nordic region and is on track to achieve a record year in container handling and rail freight transport.

This is because during the three quarters of 2025, the container volume increased by 4% and reached 709,000 TEU, achieving record levels both at the quay and on the rail network. Ro-Ro traffic is also showing a recovery after a period of lower activity, while the volume of automobiles and energy has decreased.

“It has been a fantastic year so far, especially for container traffic. Several factors are combining. Cargo owners are increasingly demanding efficient and sustainable transport options that strengthen their competitiveness. Many other northern European ports are currently facing capacity problems, which benefits us. We have the range of services, the infrastructure, and the qualified operators in all areas that allow us to meet the demand,” said Claes Sundmark, Vice President of Sales at the Port of Gothenburg.

Rail freight transport continues to boom, as over 60% of the container volume is transported by train and during the three quarters the number of containers transported to and from the port by rail rose by 4%, reaching 393,000 TEU, putting the port on track to achieve another record year.

Ro-Ro cargo recovers

During the three quarters, a total of 394,000 Ro-Ro units were handled, representing an increase of 1% compared to the previous year. After a period of lower activity in 2024, volumes are again showing a positive trend, especially in imports, while exports remain stable.

Furthermore, the port handled 172,000 automobiles during the period, representing a 9% year-on-year decrease. Exports to Europe fell by 13%, while imports experienced a slight increase. Exports to the United States decreased by 21%, mainly due to import tariffs on automobiles from the EU.
