The Port of Iquique received the ship Star Kvarven, 200 meters in length and 32 in beam, coming from the Port of Da Chan Bay, in Shenzhen, southern China, which planned to unload 238 lithium batteries (Bess) plus three 40-foot containers. The declared cargo totals 10,453 tons.

The entire port operation was carried out at the Multioperated Terminal managed by the Empresa Portuaria Iquique (EPI), infrastructure that reaffirms its capacity to handle large-volume, heavy and complex cargo.

The logistical process that takes place from the shipment of the batteries at the origin, their transfer and their arrival at the destination complies with the norms and standards required by current regulations and the competent authorities, ensuring safe transport and handling.

The batteries are destined for the photovoltaic solar project called Elena, located in the municipality of María Elena, Antofagasta Region, developed by the Spanish group Ibereólica Renovables. This initiative is located on an area of 110 hectares; the total projected is 540 MW; and it is expected to produce about 210 GWh per year.

The Bess system (Battery Energy Storage System) consists of large-scale lithium batteries designed to store electrical energy when generation exceeds demand (for example, during hours of high solar radiation) and release it when needed (when generation decreases or electrical demand is high). This improves energy efficiency by preventing the generated product from being wasted.
