Port of Los Angeles handled 890,861 TEU in April, up 5.7% year on year and enough to make it the port’s second-best April on record, according to the Port of Los Angeles.

Loaded imports rose 5% from a year earlier to 459,825 TEU and were 21% higher than in March. Loaded exports fell 0.5% to 127,726 TEU, while empty containers increased 10% to 303,310 TEU.

The port has handled 3,279,704 TEU in the first four months of 2026, 2% above its five-year average for the period but 2% below last year’s pace, when cargo volumes were boosted by front-loading.

“April was our strongest month this year and the highest cargo volume we’ve seen since last August, a clear sign that the American consumer remains resilient,” executive director Gene Seroka said.

Seroka said retailers and manufacturers continued to move goods despite uncertainty around tariffs and trade policy, with imports linked to back-to-school and early holiday merchandise already beginning to build in Asia. He said cargo was moving without back-ups or delays, supported by longshore workers, terminal operators, trucking companies and rail partners.

The Port of Los Angeles is a department of the City of Los Angeles and operates the city’s harbour assets in San Pedro Bay under a landlord port model.
