Pisano: decisiva turning point in the port’s logistical organization

Today in the port of Marina di Carrara, the metal structure of the new railway bridge was installed, replacing the old railway bridge over the Carrione. This will be followed by the seaward relocation of the current railway, which will reconnect to the existing tracks within the port area. Work to modify the railway route is already underway and will reach its peak in August, when rail freight transport is usually suspended. At the beginning of next September, once the new railway route is operational, the adjacent old bridge can be demolished, making way for the new port access road and the walkway for the Tyrrhenian cycle path. Both works will allow the complete activation, by June 2027, of the new eastern gateway of the port, through which all goods entering and leaving the port will pass, including the special modules produced by Baker Hughes. In this way, Viale Da Verrazzano will be relieved of the current truck traffic heading to the port and can be fully redeveloped in a manner similar to what is happening for Viale Colombo.
The works related to the new gateway are part of Area 1 of the Marina di Carrara waterfront redevelopment project and represent a total investment of 16.1 million euros, plus over 1.9 million euros for the railway bridge.
“The launching of the new railway bridge,” emphasized the President of the Eastern Ligurian Sea Port System Authority, Bruno Pisano, on the occasion of the presentation of the work, “marks a decisive turning point in the logistical organization of the port of Marina di Carrara. With this strategic work for the port and the city, we are completing the first phase of works that have committed the authority to 110 million euros, after the integration between the ports of La Spezia and Marina di Carrara, 77 million in recent years, and which will continue with the dredging and the extension of the Taliercio quay. By June, the works of Area 2 of the waterfront redevelopment up to Viale XX Settembre will be completed. This ideally represents the first investment plan that could be implemented under the old Port Master Plan and which we aim to complete by the end of 2027. The entire organization is working with maximum commitment to successfully conclude the process for the approval of the new Port Master Plan, so long awaited by the entire port community and beyond. At that time, it will be possible to launch the second phase of the planned investments, to make the port of Marina di Carrara an innovative, sustainable, attractive, and competitive port.”
“The new eastern entrance,” added the Councillor for Economic Development of the Municipality of Carrara, Carlo Orlandi, “is a strategic work not only for the port of Marina di Carrara but for our entire territory. Thanks to the interventions being carried out by the Port System Authority, not only will the interface between the port and the coastline improve, but the port’s own operations will be more functional and safer.

Investing in the port means investing in the growth of the territory, investing in qualified jobs and in the development of strategic sectors, for this reason we hope that in the future work and planning for the development of the port will continue. Carrara, its province and the entire wider area can no longer wait: there are challenges that need to be taken up and knots that must be untied, first among them that of the new Port Master Plan, an essential tool for planning the future of the entire Apuan economy.
