The President of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, enacted a law approving the agreement to relocate the free zone granted by Argentina to Paraguay in the Port of Rosario. The initiative seeks to reactivate the free port and turn it into a strategic point for Paraguayan exports of grains and other products, improving logistics on the Waterway.

The aforementioned agreement authorizes the Joint Commission of the Agreement for the Establishment of a Free Zone in the port of Rosario (Province of Santa Fe), for the Republic of Paraguay, of November 29, 1979, to “agree on the relocation of the free zone under equal or better conditions than those of the current site.”

The understanding seeks to update the original agreement from 1979 and aims to reactivate the free port and turn it into a strategic point for Paraguayan exports of grains and other products, improving logistics on the Paraguay-Paraná waterway, reported ABC.

The relocation proposals formalized by the Argentine province of Santa Fe analyzed the possibility of Paraguay accessing a 13-hectare enclave located in an area with high potential for the development of a new port venture and reaffirming its strategic presence in the port precinct of Rosario.

The parties discussed the existing alternatives to match or improve the characteristics of the restored site, maintaining or improving the conditions stipulated in the 1979 agreement, and considering the necessary conditions for the full operability of the Free Zone, in accordance with current requirements in terms of efficiency, modernization, and competitiveness.
