New proposal for ferry service to Ærø: The Conservative lead candidate for the upcoming municipal election, Mads Boeberg, now proposes replacing the two car ferries between Svendborg and Ærøskøbing with one or more new fast ferries that can make the trip in 30 minutes.
“It should be faster to sail between Ærøskøbing and Svendborg. This is achieved with some fast electric ferries that only carry passengers,” says Mads Boeberg to /Fyn
The car traffic would then be handled via the already existing ferries between Søby and Faaborg and Marstal and Rudkøbing.
“There are many people who live and work in Svendborg. I believe that some of them would like to move to Ærø if it only took them 30 minutes to commute between Ærø and their job in Svendborg,” says Mads Boeberg.
However, the rethinking has so far not been well received among the other politicians on Ærø.
The Denmark Democrats’ lead candidate Bent Juul Sørensen calls the proposal “completely insane”, and the island’s Social Democratic mayor Peter Hansted is also dismissive of the proposal, which points to the Swedish Artemis EF-24 ferries as a possible solution.
