Rio Brasil Terminal (RBT), the operation of International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) at the Port of Rio de Janeiro, has received two new quay cranes as part of its expansion and modernization program. This acquisition is expected to enhance the terminal’s vessel handling capacity and overall efficiency across all its berths.
The new cranes are designed to handle larger vessels, with a total length of 400 meters and a capacity of up to 20,000 TEU, enabling better berth utilization and faster turnaround times.
“These new assets will contribute to greater operational efficiency and further improve the quality of service we offer our customers. They represent a major step forward in our expansion and modernization program, which is scheduled for completion in 2029,” stated Roberto Lopes, CEO of RBT.
This latest acquisition brings the total number of RBT’s port cranes to six.
Container volume at the Port of Rio has grown significantly since 2023, reflecting the strong growth of Brazilian foreign trade. RBT’s expansion seeks to respond to the growing trade volume, accompanied by the upward trend of larger vessels calling on the east coast of South America, thus ensuring that the terminal can meet future demand.
In addition to the acquisition of modern port equipment, the program includes the unification and expansion of storage areas, the reorganization of operational areas to optimize internal process flows, and the adoption of advanced technologies and automation. These investments will strengthen the Port of Rio’s position to support Brazil’s foreign trade and contribute to a more competitive national logistics chain, by helping to mitigate bottlenecks at other ports.
Once completed, the infrastructure expansion and modernization program will increase RBT’s annual capacity to 750,000 TEU and consolidate the Port of Rio’s position as a leading logistics hub for the southwest and central-west regions of Brazil.
