Leading shipping companies have formed the Maritime Association for Clean Seas (MACS), a new industry alliance designed to achieve measurable reductions in plastic and operational waste.

The association was founded by Seven Clean Seas (SCS), an ocean impact organization, and brings together founding members including Berge Bulk, Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM), X-Press Feeders, and Britoil Offshore Services, alongside others across the maritime value chain.

MACS aims to advance best practices, innovation, and collaboration across the supply chain to reduce plastic leakage and protect marine environments.

The initiative builds on the International Maritime Organization’s Plastic Marine Litter Action Plan and reflects broader demand for coordinated action on plastic pollution.

SCS’ existing projects, focused on recovering ocean plastic in heavily affected coastal regions and supporting local employment, serve as the foundation for MACS. For 2026, the alliance will prioritize sustainable procurement and material use, vessel waste measurement and reduction, and improved portside waste reception.

These focus areas align with the IMO’s 2030 Action Plan and contribute to SCS’ goal of recovering 100,000,000 kilograms of plastic and improving 200,000 lives by 2030.

“Seven Clean Seas has always believed in collective action as the most powerful lever for change,” said Tom Peacock-Nazil, Founder & Chairman of MACS.

Seven Clean Seas is an ocean impact organization that develops certified plastic recovery projects and community-focused initiatives in coastal regions. It operates as a project developer focused on reducing marine plastic pollution through recovery systems and local employment programs.
