The positive signals are certified by “Port Infographics”, the report produced by Assoporti and SRM

The port system of western Sicily proves to be in good health, as highlighted by the data provided by the latest issue of “Port Infographics”, the report produced by Assoporti and SRM, which collects and analyzes the main statistical data relating to maritime transport, logistics and national and international port systems in 2025. The Report confirms the strategic role of the Mediterranean in the new global trade geographies and provides a picture of substantial resilience and competitiveness of the Italian port system, despite an international scenario characterized by geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainties.

The results recorded by the ports of the Port System Authority of the Western Sicilian Sea are particularly significant. The port of Termini Imerese stands out above all, where goods handled reach an increase of +56.4%. Also important is the data relating to the new terminal inaugurated less than a year ago, which handled 73,286 tonnes of containers. The port of Trapani is also growing consistently, with an increase in goods equal to +32.7%, while ro-ro traffic shows a +27.7%, testifying to the centrality of short-sea shipping connections.

Positive performances also come from the ports overlooking the Strait of Sicily: Porto Empedocle marks an increase of +19% in goods handling, while Licata reaches +36.5%, confirming widespread growth of the entire port network of western Sicily. Finally, in total passenger traffic, the western ports maintain a positive trend. The report shows how the impact of international tensions related to the Hormuz area appears, at least for now, still limited for the ports of western Sicily. This is both because the system’s ports are not directly affected by traffic coming from abroad — apart from the connection with Tunis — and because the prevailing share of traffic concerns the Mediterranean short sea.

“Naturally we are very satisfied with this result — comments the president of the AdSP of the Western Sicilian Sea, Annalisa Tardino — especially for the increase recorded in the port of Termini Imerese, which fits into a particularly important strategic and political context. Despite difficulties and global uncertainties, ro-ro traffic continues to grow and exceeds, in Italy, 122 million tonnes, consolidating the country’s primacy in Mediterranean maritime connections. These are all data that demonstrate how the Mediterranean retains a strategic centrality on a global level, and how Sicily, thanks to its geographical position and port network, can play an increasingly important role in the new international logistics balances”.
