The marine energy provider Peninsula announced the expansion of its physical supply operations in Algoa Bay, South Africa, to serve HSFO and VLSFO units in Port Elizabeth and the Port of Coega from October. This is the latest step in the company’s strategic expansion, following success in Mauritius, Egypt and a solid intra-African resale portfolio.
In collaboration with Linsen Nambi, an established logistics service provider and bunker barge operator in South Africa, Peninsula will leverage local expertise to provide its clients with solutions in Algoa Bay, which hosts Port Elizabeth and the Port of Coega, on the country’s southeast coast, strategically located along major international shipping routes.
John A. Bassadone, CEO of Peninsula, stated that “our expansion into Algoa Bay is a testament to our commitment to provide consistent product availability and options to our global client network. Linsen Nambi’s local expertise has been invaluable as we prepare to launch operations, and we look forward to continuing to collaborate to pave the way for increased activity in South Africa.”
Guillermo Cancela, Regional Supply Manager for the Middle East and Africa at Peninsula, said that “Algoa Bay is an area that, crucially, allows vessels to bunker without berthing, significantly reducing waiting times and costs. Thanks to our established presence in Mauritius, Algoa Bay allows us to create operational synergies in both markets. By offering key fuels in these locations, we open up new opportunities and provide reliable service to clients across the continent.”
The launch of Peninsula’s operations follows collaboration with a variety of local stakeholders to re-establish the region’s bunkering activities, in accordance with new regulatory protocols, providing more options to ship operators working in the region.
“Peninsula’s entry into this market is a strong vote of confidence in the South African bunker industry and highlights its long-term potential. The growth of Algoa Bay as a bunkering destination benefits the region and strengthens South Africa’s role in global shipping,” stated Durand Naidoo, CEO of Linsen Nambi.
