According to Shipping Industry Network, South Korea’s shipbuilding industry has begun recruiting talent for specialized vessel departments responsible for ship design and construction. This forward-looking initiative aims to secure labor reserves amid the anticipated deepening of shipbuilding cooperation between South Korea and the United States.

Recently, HD Hyundai (HD Hyundai Heavy Industries) has started continuous recruitment for experienced positions in its specialized vessel department and expanded staffing for design-related roles.

HD Hyundai’s main shipyard is located in Ulsan’s Dong District, while it has also established an office in a co-working space in Haeundae District, Busan.

Since U.S. President Trump took office, the U.S. has sought collaboration with South Korea’s shipbuilding industry to revitalize its own competitiveness. Meanwhile, South Korean shipbuilders are eager to participate in the U.S. Navy’s Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) market.

In June this year, Hanwha Ocean also recruited experienced employees for its specialized vessel department, filling vacancies across all related divisions, including overseas sales, overseas strategy, MRO operations, project management, and quality management. Notably, the MRO division prioritized candidates with experience in U.S. heavy industries or involvement in U.S. Navy ship project proposals.

In July last year, HD Hyundai and Hanwha Ocean signed a Master Ship Repair Agreement (MSRA) with the U.S. Navy’s Supply Systems Command. This agreement serves as a cooperative framework for U.S. military vessel maintenance, and securing an MSRA is a prerequisite for participating in U.S. Navy ship repair projects.

South Korea’s HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (formerly Hanjin Heavy Industries) has also entered the MRO sector, recently launching recruitment for experienced positions in its specialized vessel department.

Since April this year, HJ Shipbuilding & Construction has formed a dedicated task force to advance the signing of an MSRA.

Originally focused on U.S. Coast Guard patrol boat projects, HJ Shipbuilding & Construction’s specialized vessel department has now recruited personnel for ship and weapon system design to prepare for involvement in U.S. Navy MRO operations.
