According to an AFP report, Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez announced nine measures on September 8 aimed at stopping the “Gaza genocide,” including an arms embargo on Israel and a ban on ships transporting fuel for the Israeli military from using Spanish ports.
The report stated that this is the latest escalation of Spain’s strongest criticism yet of Israel’s actions in Gaza.
These measures also include Spain permanently and legally prohibiting arms, ammunition, and military equipment transactions with Israel, banning ships carrying fuel for the Israeli military from docking at Spanish ports, prohibiting aircraft carrying defense materials for Israel from entering Spanish airspace, and barring individuals directly involved in genocide, human rights violations, and war crimes in the Gaza Strip from entering Spanish territory.
At the same time, the Spanish government will continue to increase its support for the Palestinian National Authority and establish new cooperation with Palestine in areas such as agriculture, food security, and medical assistance.
Spain’s donation to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) will be increased by an additional 10 million euros; humanitarian aid and cooperation budget for the Gaza Strip will also be increased to 150 million euros.
In response to the Spanish government’s aforementioned measures, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced countermeasures on the same day, banning Spanish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Labor and Social Economy Yolanda Díaz and Spanish Minister of Youth and Children Sira Rego from entering the country, accusing the two of “supporting terror and violence against Israelis.”
On the same day, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares announced the recall of the Spanish ambassador to Israel. This move is intended to respond to Israel’s defamatory accusations against the Spanish government and the unacceptable measures targeting members of the Spanish government.
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz announced on September 8 local time that personal sanctions would be imposed on two Spanish government officials, banning them from entering the country and suspending all official contact.
Data released by the Gaza Health Ministry on September 7 shows that since Israel resumed military operations in the Gaza Strip on March 18, Israeli attacks on various parts of the Gaza Strip have resulted in nearly 12,000 deaths and over 50,000 injuries.
Furthermore, in the past 24 hours, five more people in the Gaza Strip have died from hunger or malnutrition, including three children.
Israeli Defense Forces spokesperson Avichay Adraee stated on the 4th that the IDF has taken control of 40% of Gaza City and intends to expand and intensify military operations in the coming days.
The Israeli security cabinet approved a plan in early August for the IDF to take over Gaza City, which has drawn condemnation and opposition both domestically and internationally.
