Svitzer Australia has boosted its fleet in Port Kembla, New South Wales (NSW), by mobilising two more tugboats to the growing port
In Port Kembla, the Maersk Group subsidiary welcomed 2017-built Svitzer Bass and 2016-built Svitzer Flinders, mobilised from another Australian port.
These two tugs will operate alongside 2019-built Svitzer Ruby and another Svitzer tugboat in Port Kembla, which has seen growth in shipborne trade, particularly in commodities such as iron ore, coal and grain.
There are also opportunities for more roro ships, car carriers, container ships and gas carriers in the port, operated by NSW Ports.
The Yard Brisbane has completed maintenance and repairs on two Svitzer Australia tugs.
The Queensland shipyard carried out emergency repairs to 2000-built Svitzer Clontarf after it was damaged by severe weather. Svitzer Australia said Svitzer Clontarf was towed from its Brisbane tug base to The Yard Brisbane and pulled out of the water for emergency assistance.
“Dockings are not always planned or in ideal conditions, and Svitzer relies on and appreciates our service providers stepping up when needed,” the company said.
Docking 2007-built Svitzer Newstead tug for its third five-year special survey was planned. The docking scope included a major overhaul of the thrusters by Kongsberg with assistance from RL Marine.
In Brisbane, Svitzer Australia helped to dock the first cruise ships at the new Brisbane International cruise terminal.
Svitzer Colmslie and SL Murrumbidgee tugboats ensured the safe berthing of Pacific Explorer 2 June 2022. This was the first cruise ship to return to the Port of Brisbane for two years.
