Shipping industry news: Finnish shipowner Rederiet Stenersen has enrolled its fleet of 19 chemical and product tankers into Ahti Climates’ vessel pool. These ships, with deadweight tonnage ranging between 13,000 and 18,500, typically operate in the North Sea and Northern Europe. Rederiet Stenersen’s fleet offers long-term chartering services, including to Neste, a fellow member of the Ahti pool.

The company stated that joining the Ahti pool will provide access to a proprietary emissions management platform and expertise in fuel procurement. The pool is structured around FuelEU Maritime compliance, utilizing its emissions pooling mechanism and fuel marketplace, where members can trade compliance credits by using low-emission fuels like biofuels.

This mechanism allows vessels exceeding limits to share emission reductions with those falling short of carbon intensity targets, distributing carbon credits to help avoid heavy penalties. The Ahti pool reportedly manages hundreds of vessels, including Van Weelde Group’s Handysize and Ultramax fleets, Neste’s tankers, and Spliethoff’s ships, representing over €100 million in emissions risk.

“Joining Ahti is a natural extension of our mission to provide safe, reliable, and efficient transportation while upholding the highest environmental standards,” said Christopher Stenersen, Environmental Advisor at Rederiet Stenersen. “We chose this pool not only for FuelEU Maritime compliance but also for its competitive pricing, deep industry insights, and operational flexibility.”

Risto-Juhani Kariranta, CEO of Ahti Pool, added: “Rederiet Stenersen’s inclusion amplifies our collective sustainability impact and demonstrates the power of collaboration. Together, we’ll set new benchmarks for streamlined compliance and emissions reduction in the tanker sector.”
