The generous donation of T. Martinou to the General Children’s Hospital of Athens “Agia Sofia

The Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis and the Deputy Minister of Health Marios Themistocleous attended today, Tuesday, October 14, 2025, the inauguration ceremony of the renovated laboratories of the Cardiology Department of the General Hospital of Athens Children “Agia Sophia”, in the presence of the Administrator of the Interconnected G.H.P.A. “Agia Sophia” & “P. & A. Kyriakou” Tasos Michas and the donor Thanasis Martinos.

The Cardiology Department of the “Special Center for the Treatment of Congenital Heart Diseases in Children”, is the only Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery Center in the N.H.S. that operates in a Pediatric Hospital and was renovated with a donation from Thanasis Martinos, which includes the renovation of the premises (area of 460 m²) and hotel equipment, with a total value of 570,000 euros.

Today, the area of the Hemodynamics laboratory includes a state-of-the-art digital Angiograph, three echocardiographs, the Holter analysis room, the simple and respiratory stress testing area, the recovery area for patients undergoing catheterization, three doctor’s offices, a conference room, and modern hotel equipment.

Annually, 7,500 cardiology assessments with echocardiogram and electrocardiogram are performed, 850 24-hour recording holters are placed, 150 stress tests and 150 heart catheterizations, the majority of which are therapeutic. In the cardiology clinic, there are over 300 admissions, while 90 cardiothoracic surgeries are performed per year.

After the inauguration ceremony, the Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis stated:

“With particular emotion and gratitude, I express my warm thanks to Mr. Thanasis Martinos for his generous donation to the General Hospital of Athens Children ‘Agia Sophia’. Thanks to his contribution, the laboratories of the Cardiology Department of the ‘Special Center for the Treatment of Congenital Heart Diseases in Children’ were fully renovated, upgrading the provided services to a level worthy of the most modern European centers. The State recognizes and honors such acts of social responsibility, which strengthen the public health system and promote hope and care for our children.”

The Deputy Minister of Health Marios Themistocleous stated:

“Today marks a significant upgrade of health services and especially those we provide to our children with serious cardiological problems. We warmly thank Mr. Thanasis Martinos for his tangible support. This is a donation that strengthens infrastructure, promotes innovation and quality of care in the public health system. It fills us with joy and satisfaction that in this effort there are people who support us. Our will is for a strong, modern and accessible NHS, where every child will receive high-level care regardless of social or economic status.”

The Administrator of the Interconnected G.H.P.A. “Agia Sophia” & “P. & A. Kyriakou” Tasos Michas stated:

“Today at the General Hospital of Athens Children ‘Agia Sophia’, the inauguration of the renovated laboratories of the Cardiology Department of the ‘Special Center for the Treatment of Congenital Heart Diseases in Children’ took place, the only Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery Center in the N.H.S. that operates in a Pediatric Hospital supported by all pediatric specialties. A laboratory, which, thanks to the generous contribution of the benefactor Mr. Thanasis Martinos, became comparable to corresponding European ones.”
