The world’s largest livestock carrier, the Ocean Shearer, which can carry up to 75,000 sheep, has set sail, impressing with its size.
The MV Ocean Shearer, launched in 2016 by the Australian Wellard Limited and built by the COSCO shipyards in China, is the largest livestock carrier ever built.
With a length of 189.3 meters, a width of 31 meters, nine decks and a vast area of 23,500 square meters for animals, it can carry up to 20,000 cattle or 75,000 sheep. With a gross tonnage of 36,028 and a range of 18,000 miles, the ship combines both size and engineering to take the global trade of live animals to an unprecedented scale.
To support these huge loads, it has five reverse osmosis units capable of producing 800 tons of fresh water daily while it can store 3,000 tons of animal feed.
The Ocean Shearer not only surpassed the previous record holder, the MV Ocean Drover, but introduced advanced systems for animal care and voyage efficiency.
Designed with animal welfare in mind, it continues to dominate the seas as the king of livestock carriers.
