If for the existing fleet the origin of individual ships is already a sign of the naval engineering dominance of Korea (50.1%), China (29.4%), and Japan (9.9%), the container ship orderbook is even more characterized by this division, with a total of 98.5% (with the following respective percentages: 20.2%, 74%, 4.2%).
With an order portfolio that is currently the largest ever, with over one thousand new builds and over 10 million teu of additional hold space ordered, equal to 31.1% of the global fleet in terms of teu slot capacity, the 1.5% of shipbuilding outside the Asian triad still represents a reason for examination for Alphaliner.
Of the 29 container ships under construction outside of China, Korea, and Japan, 16 will be built in Taiwan Area, China, 4 in Turkey, 3 in the United States, and 2 in India. Some very small ships will then be built ordered from shipyards in Azerbaijan, Indonesia, and Pakistan.
“In many cases, there are specific reasons why these ships were ordered from shipyards outside the 3 major shipbuilding nations,” explained Alphaliner. “The two largest ships in Turkey, 4,012 teu ships, are under construction at a shipyard that is an affiliate company of the shipowner and operator that commissioned them. The orders in the United States are clearly motivated by the requirements of the Jones Act, which requires tonnage built in the United States for operations on domestic services, such as the lines for Hawaii, Alaska, and Puerto Rico.”
