The ships on that day will not perform any routes. The strike will begin at 00:01 and will be completed at 24:00 of the same day, covering all categories of ships throughout the country.
As stated in an announcement by the union organization of seafarers, the reason for the mobilization is the new bill from the Ministry of Labour, which provides for an increase in the daily working time to 13 hours. The PNO emphasizes that this regulation essentially abolishes the historic triad “8 hours work, 8 hours recreation, 8 hours rest” and creates serious problems in the personal life, health, and safety of workers.
The Panhellenic Seafarers’ Federation (PNO) places particular emphasis on the working and living conditions of workers on ships and simultaneously strives for more favorable conditions. “It is indicative that in August 2013, when the prevailing political, economic, and social conditions were negative for workers, the Regulation for the Implementation of Requirements of the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC) of the International Labour Organization was ratified, where in Article 8, unfortunately, the right is given to shipowners to employ the ship’s crew for up to 14 hours daily, with the exception of RORO-PAX-LPG vessels, where the maximum daily working time for the crew is 10 hours,” it points out in its announcement.
