TMC Compressors was selected by Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipbuilding to supply marine compressed air systems for 12 new 16,800 TEU container ships being built for Hapag-Lloyd.

Each compressed air system consists of two compressors, one of them with frequency control, for the onboard SCR system. Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) is an exhaust gas aftertreatment technology used on ships to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from engines.

“These 12 container ships are impressive vessels designed to significantly reduce CO2 emissions compared to similar ships with conventional propulsion systems. We look forward to supporting the operation of these ships with our compressor technologies, including the SCR system. We are proud to provide high energy efficiency compressors, which in this case perfectly match the shipowners’ ambitions,” said Hans-Petter Tanum, director of sales and business development at TMC.

The 12 new ships will be equipped with state-of-the-art, low-emission, high-pressure dual-fuel liquefied gas engines. Furthermore, they will be able to operate on biomethane, which allows for a reduction in CO2e emissions of up to 95% compared to conventional propulsion systems, and will be prepared to operate on ammonia. According to Hapag-Lloyd, the delivery of the ships will take place between 2027 and 2029.
