Two young North Africans attempt to escape from the ship “Stena Shipper”: one was sucked into the propeller of a ferry, while the search for the second continues

Livorno – Drama in the port of Livorno, where two young men of North African origin — probably Tunisian — threw themselves into the sea in an attempt to escape from the cargo ship “Stena Shipper”, moored between the Zara passage and the Benghasi dock. The two had been found hiding in a container from Rades (Tunisia) and, after being identified, had been entrusted to the ship’s captain for repatriation.

Taking advantage of a moment of distraction, the migrants forced the lock of the cabin they were in and threw themselves into the water. One of them was sucked into the propeller of the Grimaldi company ferry “Eco Napoli”, which was in transit at that moment, while the other has not been heard from since.

Rescue operations were immediately initiated and coordinated by the Port Authority, with the intervention of patrol boats, divers, firefighters, and the financial police, under the supervision of the Prefecture. The searches continue without interruption, made difficult by adverse weather conditions and the low water temperature.

Simultaneously, the maritime border police and the Port Authority have opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the escape and to verify whether all the required security measures for passengers in custody had been implemented on board.
