The County Administrative Board in Uppsala has recommended to the Swedish government that it approve the Fyrskeppet offshore windfarm, a project that could help meet growing demand for green electricity in the Stockholm area
The 2.8-GW windfarm is being developed 50 km off the Swedish mainland in Uppsala County. With a production capacity of up to 11 TWh – equivalent to 8% of Sweden’s electricity consumption – the project will help meet increased demand for electricity in Uppsala and the greater Stockholm area.
Skyborn Sweden chief executive Niclas Broman said, “This is very good news for us and the region, which is in great need of new fossil-free electricity.”
Mr Broman noted demand for electricity in the region is expected to increase by 30-40% by 2045. “Now we hope for a fast-paced process with the government and look forward to a permit in the near future,” he said.
Skyborn hopes to build the windfarm east of the Finngrundet bank. The permit application for the project is based on the use of up to 187 wind turbines with a maximum total height of 350 m.
The project has an area of 488 km2 and is located approximately 50 km north of Örskär in Uppsala County, an area partly designated as of national interest for windfarms. It is also designated in the Swedish Marine and Water Resources Agency’s marine plan as an energy extraction area.
Skyborn submitted a permit application to the government in July 2023 for the construction, operation and decommissioning of the windfarm with associated facilities in the Swedish exclusive economic zone, as well as a permit application to the County Administrative Board.
