The US Navy has set out plans for three nuclear-powered Trump-class BBGN battleships under a $43.526bn five-year surface combatant programme, according to the Department of the Navy.

The FY27-FY31 shipbuilding plan includes 14 surface combatants: seven DDGs, three BBGN next-generation battleships and four frigates.

The BBG(X) line includes $1bn in advance procurement funding in FY27, with the lead ship scheduled for procurement in FY28.

The Navy said the BBGN is designed for longer endurance, higher speed and the electrical power needed for advanced weapons. Its main role will be high-volume, long-range offensive fires, while also serving as a survivable forward command-and-control platform.

The service said the battleship is not intended to replace destroyers.

An earlier Navy statement identified the future USS Defiant (BBG 1) as the first Trump-class battleship. It said the class would be able to launch Conventional Prompt Strike hypersonic missiles and the Surface Launch Cruise Missile-Nuclear.

The US Navy is the maritime service branch of the US armed forces and operates under the Department of the Navy. It is responsible for naval operations, fleet readiness and long-term force development.

The Department of the Navy is a US military department within the Department of Defense. It oversees the US Navy and US Marine Corps, including procurement planning, budget submissions and shipbuilding priorities.
