A delegation of exporting companies from Peru, grouped within the Association of Agricultural Producer Guilds (AGAP) and with the support of the Commission for the Promotion of Export and Tourism of the Andean country, has visited the port of Algeciras. This is a reverse mission with which the Peruvian delegation concludes its trip to Europe to participate during the week in the Fruit Attraction fair which just ended at Ifema Madrid.
The Peruvian delegation visited the main facilities of the port of Algeciras where Peruvian products are handled when they arrive in Europe, such as the APM Terminals Algeciras container terminal, the refrigerated storage terminals, and the Border Control Post (PCF) on the first anniversary of the new protocol for the control of fruits and vegetables, a pilot project which after its success is being implemented in the rest of the country. Following this tour, they attended, together with companies from the port community, the technical session on reefer logistics held at the Port Authority with interventions from representatives of AGAP, Invest in Spain, ICEX, Ateia, TransIberian Foods, APBA and the PCF, among others.
As explained by the president of AGAP, Gabriel Amaro, along with mining, agriculture is one of the potential areas for the development of Peru’s international trade “but we are only just beginning.” Thus, within a decade they expect to double current agricultural exports, mainly due to increased production and maritime connectivity with Asia thanks to new ports like Chancay. Although with “many” community regulations, Amaro highlighted that Europe is an “extremely important” market for his country. For Algeciras, Peru is one of the main commercial partners in reefer traffic with continuous growth, and especially for perishables like avocado or grapes that are out of season in Spain and Europe. In the last five-year period (2019-2024), the growth of reefer containers for export between the port of Algeciras and Peru is 80%.
