Wärtsilä Water & Waste, belonging to the technology group Wärtsilä, has introduced a line of flexible and modular grease traps designed to separate fats, oils and waste from the wastewater of galleys on merchant vessels, cruise ships and offshore platforms. This solution contributes to better wastewater management while protecting the marine environment by capturing fats, oils and waste before they reach discharge systems, ensuring their disposal in compliance with current regulations.

Effective management of fats and oils is essential for onboard wastewater treatment. If not properly controlled, grease can accumulate in pipes and treatment systems, increasing the risk of blockages, interruptions in vessel operation and additional maintenance needs.

The system is designed in accordance with the European standard BS EN 1825 for grease separators and operates through a gravity separation process. Wastewater enters the unit, where solids settle, while the grease, having lower density, rises to the surface and is retained in a specific collection chamber. The clarified water continues its path through the tank’s discharge system.

The GM series grease trap is available in four sizes to suit the needs of each vessel, with options that facilitate the handling and removal of grease. Depending on the configuration, operators can choose a simple manual solution or a version designed to simplify grease removal and reduce manual maintenance. This helps crews manage galley wastewater more efficiently, ensures more reliable system performance and reduces the risk of blockages and unnecessary interruptions onboard.

The GM series of GREASE TRAP is part of Wärtsilä Water & Waste’s leading portfolio of integrated wastewater management solutions and will be available in May 2026.
