A malfunction occurred on the Turkish oil tanker named Mersin, flagged in Panama and operated by Beşiktaş Denizcilik, off the coast of Dakar, the capital of Senegal. Senegal port authorities stated that the tanker’s engine room had taken on water and that action was taken to prevent a potential leak. Port authorities reported that the ship sent an emergency signal on the night of November 28, prompting the Senegal navy, maritime authority, and special teams to take action. The authorities did not provide further details about the incident. It was reported that all crew members on board were rescued without injury.
In a statement, port authorities said, “Authorities are working to stabilize the ship, prevent an oil spill, and reduce environmental risks.” It was stated that emergency measures included stopping the leak, transferring the fuel load, and placing anti-pollution barriers around the tanker as a precaution.
