WinGD has unveiled its first high-pressure LNG dual-fuel engine, the X-DF-HP, according to the company. Introduced at Marintec China 2025 in Shanghai, the engine targets the operating profiles of ultra-large container vessels as shipowners face a paused IMO Net Zero Framework and increasingly fragmented regional regulation.
Available in X82 and X92 bore sizes, the model is designed for the scale, speed and load requirements of the ULCV segment, with first deliveries planned for 2028.
The company states that, based on comparisons between the efficiency of its established diesel engines and similar dual-fuel designs, the high-pressure dual-fuel concept is expected to offer improved efficiency. “Large container vessels present a unique propulsion challenge,” said Benny Hilström, Vice President, Market Development at WinGD. He added that the X-DF-HP is intended to provide “a purpose-built solution for the most power-hungry vessels, offering uncompromised, trouble-free propulsion.”
The engine is available with the same auxiliary system requirements, including fuel supply pressure, as other recognised concepts, a feature described as supportive of straightforward shipyard installation. The model is said to achieve Tier III compliance in both gas and diesel modes with only a standard SCR.
Sebastian Hensel, Vice President R&D at WinGD, stated that the X-DF-HP is built on the high-pressure Diesel X92-B engine platform and that tests and simulations indicate improved fuel efficiency and GHG performance compared to existing high-pressure dual-fuel engines.
The new model extends the company’s portfolio of high-pressure multi-fuel solutions, including the /ethanol-capable /E and the ammonia-fuelled X-DF-A, while enabling retrofits of established engines such as the X92-B for high-pressure LNG, methanol, ethanol or ammonia.
The company notes that LNG supports FuelEU Maritime compliance into the next decade and that the X-DF and X-DF-HP platforms are compatible with renewable methane blends.
