ClassNK has issued an Approval in Principle (AiP) for the Samsung Remote Operation Center (SROC), a remote monitoring system from land developed by Samsung Heavy Industries. A certificate presentation ceremony was held at Kormarine 2025.

“ClassNK participates in various demonstration projects and continuously works on the development of necessary safety standards, in order to support the development and implementation of /autonomous operation technologies from a safety perspective,” the company stated.

“Based on these experiences, ClassNK published its ‘Guidelines for /Autonomous Operation of Ships’, which comprehensively summarize the requirements for each stage of the conceptual design, design development, installation and maintenance during the operation of these technologies. These guidelines also establish the specific safety requirements for remote operation systems and their corresponding evaluation methods,” it added.

For the conceptual design of the SROC, ClassNK conducted a safety review based on the requirements of the Guidelines for /Autonomous Operation of Ships and examined the risk assessment through Hazid, with the participation of relevant stakeholders. After confirming compliance with the requirements, ClassNK issued the AiP.

“ClassNK will continue to improve the environment for the use of /autonomous operation technologies by providing standards for advanced initiatives and technological verification,” the entity concluded.
