A recent meeting at the headquarters of the Port Authority of Gioia Tauro has laid the groundwork for strategic cooperation between the Calabrian port and Tanger Med in Morocco, one of the most advanced logistics hubs in the Mediterranean. The objective of the meeting was to transform the Mediterranean basin from a border into a “common space of opportunity and shared progress”.
The meeting, as reported by gazzettadiplomatica.it, saw the participation of key figures including Paolo Piacenza, the new extraordinary commissioner of the Port Authority, Domenico Naccari, honorary consul of the Kingdom of Morocco for Calabria, the mayor of Gioia Tauro, Simona Scarcella, and Giuseppe Saletta, councilor of the Bar Association of Palmi.
Among the proposals that emerged from the meeting, the idea of launching a feasibility study for a passenger and freight maritime line between Gioia Tauro and Tangier garnered particular interest and appreciation. The initiative aims to establish a direct link between the two shores of the Mediterranean to facilitate trade between Italy and Morocco, promote tourism and industrial cooperation, and strengthen economic and cultural ties. As Domenico Naccari, honorary consul of the Kingdom of Morocco for Calabria, emphasized, “Strengthening cooperation between Italy and Morocco means investing in stability, development and logistics innovation.”
The discussion also covered the development of the Gioia Tauro hinterland, an infrastructure considered fundamental for the logistical and productive revival of the area.
The potential of Gioia Tauro, a logistics platform of primary international importance, can only be fully realized through a network of stable and complementary relationships with other Mediterranean ports. The extraordinary commissioner Paolo Piacenza confirmed that the collaboration with Tanger Med goes “exactly in this direction, opening new perspectives for intermodality, passenger traffic and the growth of the hinterland.”
The municipal administration of Gioia Tauro, through Mayor Simona Scarcella, confirmed it looks favorably on initiatives that enhance the port and its related activities, believing that the dialogue with Morocco opens “new and concrete scenarios” that can reposition the city at the center of the Mediterranean’s commercial and cultural routes.
The joint commitment of the parties now focuses on maintaining a permanent discussion table to translate this vision into concrete tools for economic and institutional cooperation between the two port realities and their respective territories, consolidating Calabria as a natural bridge between Europe and Mediterranean Africa, in line with Euro-African cooperation objectives.
