Damen Shipyards has signed a contract with Associated British Ports (ABP) for a trailing suction grab hopper dredger fitted with emissions reduction technology.

The newbuild will be operated by ABP subsidiary UK Dredging (UKD) to help maintain safe and efficient access to British waterways.

The dredger will be a customised version of Damen’s TSHD1000 design. It will have an electrically operated grab crane and a package of sustainability-focused systems.

Its power arrangement will use diesel-electric propulsion incorporating an energy storage system. The unit will also be equipped with an Ultra Low Emission Vessel (ULEV)-compliant Damen aftertreatment system, including selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and diesel particulate filters.

Damen stated that the order marks a further step in its long-standing relationship with ABP and UKD, while supporting more efficient dredging activity in the UK.

ABP operates ports across England, Scotland and Wales, while UKD provides dredging services for ports, harbours and approach channels.
