Independent assessment confirms reliable performance and environmental compliance
New York, May 2026 – Azra Tech announces that its biocide-free, durable ultra-lowfriction hull coating solution has been selected for application on an MR2 tanker, with successful performance results confirmed after more than two years of operation.
After two years in service, the vessel’s performance remains fully consistent with the minimum fuel saving expectations set under Azra Tech’s Blue Race Guarantee, validating the coating’s contribution to improved operational efficiency and emissions reduction.
For vessels built before 2013, the EEXI reference speed (Vref) can be improved through the application of ultra-low friction coatings.
Following the updated /EEXI-related regulations, and supported by hull roughness measurements of Azra Tech’s ultra-low friction coating, a revised EEXI Vref and updated technical file have been successfully issued for the MR2 tanker. This improvement was enabled by ABS analysis, “Effect of Lower Friction Coatings on Speed–Power”.
An increase in speed up to 3% at fixed power, or alternatively an average of 11.1% reduction in required power at fixed speed in comparison to initial sea trials of new building has been estimated.
After 24 months of performance monitoring by Blue Race® team, the results at the new Vref have been confirmed and improved by up to 16%. These findings clearly demonstrate both the durability and the long-term performance stability of the coating system.
The assessment further highlighted the coating’s ability to preserve hull durable ultra-low roughness over time, with no degradation in thickness and roughness during the monitoring period. The coating contributes to SDG 14 – Life Below Water, as it contains no biocides or active ingredients that could harm marine life.
This innovative solution is introduced to the Greek and Omani markets through Green Navis, Azra Tech’s exclusive representative in these regions.
Azra Tech commented: “The decision to adopt our biocide-free hull coating reflects a growing industry focus on solutions that combine environmental responsibility with durable performance. The confirmation of results after two years demonstrates that our technology delivers on its promises, supporting fuel efficiency, emissions reduction and compliance with international regulations, while remaining fully respectful of marine ecosystems.”
