DNV has introduced the first public tender portal for e-methanol procurement in the European Union and the United Kingdom.

The platform is designed to connect a leading European e-methanol producer with industrial buyers across both markets, helping them secure long-term, reliable supplies of renewable methanol.

The initiative comes as industries face increasing demand for low-carbon fuels to decarbonize sectors such as shipping, heavy industry, and aviation.

E-methanol, produced from renewable hydrogen and captured biogenic carbon, meets regulatory requirements under frameworks including RED III, Fit for 55, EU ETS, ReFuelEU Aviation, and FuelEU Maritime, while contributing to the International Maritime Organization’s decarbonization goals.

Several EU member states, including Germany, Spain, France, and Belgium, have introduced or proposed blending mandates that exceed European-level targets.

At the same time, limited biofuel feedstocks and stricter regulations have constrained supply and raised prices, creating a need for alternative renewable fuels.

DNV’s new tender aims to close this gap by offering a transparent and competitive process to secure RFNBO-certified e-methanol volumes across the EU and UK.

The two-stage process includes an initial non-binding qualification phase to identify potential buyers, followed by direct negotiations between shortlisted participants and the producer.

According to DNV Vice-President and Regional Director Santiago Blanco, “The technology for e-methanol exists, but the market mechanisms to scale it are still forming. By launching this tender, we are applying our neutral expertise to de-risk the procurement process for both producers and offtakers.”

Production of the e-methanol will begin with certification in place from the start of the project, with deliveries expected to commence in the second half of 2028.
