Duisport and LBC drive the energy transition in the Port of Duisburg

Duisport and LBC Tank Terminals Group BV (LBC) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly develop a new terminal for handling ammonia and CO? at the Port of Duisburg, scheduled to begin operations in 2030.

With this project, which will be built on the North Rhine Wharf in Duisburg-Hochfeld, both companies aim to boost the energy transition and support industry in Europe in reducing CO2 emissions.

The planned terminal will serve as a satellite facility for LBC’s flagship project in Vlissingen, the Netherlands. There, LBC is developing a major hub for the import, storage, and cracking of ammonia. The terminal in Duisburg-Hochfeld would create a direct connection between the Netherlands and the Ruhr region, allowing customers to easily and safely obtain ammonia and hydrogen in the future.

“We look forward to building a strong connection between our two headquarters together with Duisport. This will strengthen the hydrogen and CO? supply chains in Europe. This collaboration combines our expertise in logistics and terminal operations and supports European industry in implementing sustainable solutions. This is an important step for growth and decarbonization in the region,” stated Frank Erkelens, Chief Executive Officer of LBC Tank Terminals.

The Duisburg facility will be equipped for the transport of ammonia by waterway from Vlissingen. Specific on-site infrastructure is planned for the cracking of ammonia and the production of hydrogen. Simultaneously, the terminal will serve as a warehouse for CO2 from industrial processes. The goal is to subsequently store this CO2 permanently under the seabed.
