Reino Unido announced that it will reposition the destroyer HMS Dragon in the Middle East, which had already been brought to the Mediterranean, with a view to a future international mission to protect maritime transport in the Strait of Hormuz.
The operation, promoted by the British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, and the French President, Emmanuel Macron, envisages the participation of a coalition of countries willing to safeguard freedom of navigation in this strategic passage, essential for the global supply of oil and gas, as well as other goods, including fertilizers.
The initiative responds to a demand for “rigorous planning,” so that the British government is ready “to guarantee the security of the strait, when conditions allow,” within an international coalition co-led with France, the British Ministry of Defence specified.
Alongside the HMS Dragon, the support vessel Lyme Bay is being modified to operate as a mother platform for mine-hunting drones, which could be used to assist in clearing the strait.
The security of the Strait of Hormuz is one of the key points of the conflict that began on February 28 with the Israeli-American bombings on Iran, interrupted thanks to the truce that came into effect on April 8.
Meanwhile, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated that he was awaiting a response from Iran to Washington’s most recent proposal to reach an agreement to end the war in the Middle East. The spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ismail Bagaei, stated that the American proposal is still under evaluation.
