The Danish giant Maersk is considering its return to the Red Sea and specifically to the Suez Canal.

The Suez Canal Authority announced that Maersk’s containerships will partially resume transits through the canal from early December, before their full return, but a senior company executive stated that there are no clear timelines.

It is recalled that Maersk began diverting its ships from the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea towards the southern tip of Africa in January 2024, after an attack on one of its ships by the Houthis.

As Vincent Clerc, CEO of Maersk, stated in a joint press conference with the Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, Osama Rabie, in Egypt, the Danish group has been encouraged by the truce in Gaza, which will allow freedom of navigation in the Bab al-Mandab Strait connecting the Gulf of Aden with the Red Sea. Maersk will continue voyages via the Red Sea “when conditions permit, with the safety of our crews being the absolute priority”.
