Fire erupted in hangar of Spanish Navy frigate SANTA MARÍA (F-81) in the evening Oct 7, at Rota Naval Base, Spain. Crew managed to extinguish fire, but it reignited, so Naval Base firefighters were called in, thick columns of smoke were visible far from Pier 1 of Naval Base, where frigate is docked. No injures reported, a number of non-essential crew left the ship. Hangar was empty, but understood fire spread to helipad and other outer areas. No updates as of morning Oct 8. Frigate was to leave Rota on Oct 9, to take part in EUNAVFOR and ATALANTA operations.
