The Board of Directors of the International Chamber of Shipping recently unanimously elected John Denholm CBE as Chairman of the Board. The decision was taken by the ICS Board of Directors during the organization’s Annual General Meeting, which was held at the Palazzo Valentini in Rome, Italy.

John Denholm succeeds Emanuele Grimaldi, President and Chief Executive Officer of Grimaldi Euromed SpA, who held the position of Chairman since June 2022.

John Denholm, a chartered accountant, joined the family shipping business J. & J. Denholm, assuming the position of Managing Director, in 1993. Today he holds the position of Executive Chairman of J. & J. Denholm and Denholm Energy Services. During his career, Mr. Denholm has held numerous leadership positions in shipping bodies, including the position of Chairman of both the UK Chamber of Shipping and BIMCO.

Commenting on this development, the new ICS Chairman stressed: “It is a great honor for me to be appointed Chairman of the ICS and to represent an industry that is a pillar of global trade and prosperity.

“I take on this responsibility at a time of significant upheaval and uncertainty for the global economy and international shipping. Our industry continues to face geopolitical tensions, security threats, rapid technological change, the energy transition and shifting trade patterns. Yet, despite the challenges, shipping continues to play its essential role: keeping global trade moving and transporting the goods, energy and resources on which societies depend. I look forward to working with the ICS Board of Directors and Secretariat during this critical period for our industry.”

In his statements, Mr. Thomas Kazakos, ICS Secretary General, welcomed Mr. Denholm and thanked Mr. Grimaldi for his “outstanding leadership over the past four years.”
