Against the backdrop of accelerating global supply chain restructuring, profound shifts in China-Europe trade dynamics, and the development of green shipping, the Port of Gothenburg—a major Nordic hub—has emerged as the gateway of choice for many Chinese enterprises entering the Nordic market, thanks to its exceptional multimodal transport system, stable and efficient throughput capacity, and sustainable development strategy. In the first quarter of 2024, the port handled a record-breaking 242,000 TEUs, with imports up 15% year-on-year and exports growing by 4%, showcasing its growth potential through balanced import-export momentum. Recently, Claes Sundmark, Vice President of the Port of Gothenburg, sat down for an exclusive interview with *China Shipping Gazette* to discuss the port’s strategic initiatives and practical experience in infrastructure development, green shipping advancement, and deepening cooperation with China.
**Claes Sundmark, Vice President of the Port of Gothenburg**
*China Shipping Gazette*: In 2024, the Port of Gothenburg saw a 15% increase in imports but a slight decline in exports. How has this shift impacted port operations and supply chain management? Does it reflect adjustments in China-Europe trade structures?
**Claes Sundmark**: The surge in imports last year posed no challenge for us. The Port of Gothenburg boasts ample resources and resilience in both terminal operations and hinterland connectivity. We’ve built not only an efficient port system but also a robust rail and road network, enabling swift and efficient cargo distribution across Sweden and other Nordic markets. The import growth primarily stems from recovering consumer demand in Sweden. From a broader trade perspective, China remains one of Sweden’s largest trading partners. The balanced import-export structure lays a solid foundation for stable future growth. Of course, we’re continuously evaluating tailored cooperation strategies for the Chinese market, including attracting more Chinese exporters to use Gothenburg as their gateway to the Nordics.
*China Shipping Gazette*: Amid ongoing global supply chain adjustments, how does the Port of Gothenburg maintain its competitiveness, especially compared to other major European ports? What long-term opportunities exist here for Chinese businesses?
**Claes Sundmark**: Our edge lies in being “congestion-free.” Unlike some large European ports where vessels often queue for days or even weeks, our flexible berth scheduling and fast cargo turnover significantly reduce clients’ time costs. We’re also expanding capacity—ongoing projects like new terminal construction, deepening berths to 19 meters, and expanding warehousing and rail systems are all preparations for future growth in China-Europe trade. Additionally, Chinese companies can leverage our strong Nordic market reach, using Gothenburg as their “first stop” to expand logistics and business across the Nordic countries and the EU hinterland.
*China Shipping Gazette*: What practical experience has the Port of Gothenburg gained in green and low-carbon transformation? Are there plans for green shipping cooperation with China?
**Claes Sundmark**: Green development is central to our strategy. Our port has one of the world’s highest rail transport shares, with over 60% of containers moved by rail—drastically cutting emissions compared to truck-reliant ports. We also offer alternative fuels like shore power, LNG, biogas, methanol, and methane, plus discounted port fees for eco-friendly vessels. On land, we’ve built charging and hydrogen stations for electric and hydrogen trucks, with dedicated green lanes. With Chinese partners, we’ve established strong ties with COSCO SHIPPING and maintained a 30-year sister-port relationship with Shanghai, regularly exchanging insights on green port development. We’ve also participated in the North Bund Forum and engaged with key players like IKEA and COSCO SHIPPING Lines in Sweden-China trade.
*China Shipping Gazette*: Are there plans for more China-focused route optimizations or dedicated services? How does the port view future opportunities in China-Europe shipping and multimodal transport?
**Claes Sundmark**: China is vital to us—most of our containers originate from or head there. Boosting route frequency and optimizing networks are thus top priorities. We warmly welcome shipping lines to launch more direct China-Sweden services. Long-term, Sweden-China trade has unique strengths: balanced import-export volumes and a healthy mix of 20-foot and 40-foot containers ensure stable cargo for “full inbound and outbound” voyages, minimizing empty container repositioning costs. This is a clear competitive edge over ports with trade imbalances and a solid foundation for expanding direct routes.
*China Shipping Gazette*: With fluctuating China-Europe trade and shipping demand, how does the Port of Gothenburg ensure stable growth amid uncertainty?
**Claes Sundmark**: Over the years, Sweden-China trade via Gothenburg has grown steadily without major disruptions. China remains a key partner for Sweden’s industries and consumer market, and this will continue.
*China Shipping Gazette*: What advice would you give Chinese shippers and carriers eyeing the European market? How do you see China-Europe shipping cooperation evolving?
**Claes Sundmark**: Sweden is a highly developed consumer economy with steady import demand—a natural growth hub. We strongly advise Chinese shippers to explore the vast opportunities in Sweden via Gothenburg. Our advantages—fast loading/unloading, dense schedules, zero congestion, and leading eco-standards—make us the ideal logistics channel. We’re also adaptable and open to collaboration, ready to build long-term, stable, and sustainable supply chain partnerships with Chinese clients. Moving forward, we believe China-Europe shipping will not only consolidate existing ties but also deepen cooperation in green transition, multimodal transport, and smart logistics. The Port of Gothenburg is committed to serving as a bridge in this journey.
