The role of Montevideo as a regional hub is key, especially for Uruguayan foreign trade, said the CEO of Terminal Cuenca del Plata (TCP), Kenny Pauwels. The executive participated in the inaugural call at the capital’s port of the container ship ONE Strength, the largest that the facility has ever received.
Pauwels indicated that Uruguay’s direct connection with all world markets saves time and costs that are “indispensable for the country’s connectivity.” In this regard, he highlighted the investment of more than 500 million dollars in port infrastructure and said that this allows for a 1.4-kilometer dock, four berthing points, and a new site at -17 meters.
In another part, the CEO highlighted the relationship built between TCP and ONE Uruguay, based on mutual respect between companies and people, as well as shared values, and the focus on sustainability and technological innovation.
Furthermore, the head of TCP reaffirmed the company’s commitment to restarting the works at the port of Montevideo as soon as possible, and recalled that the fleet of straddle carriers was almost completely renewed with the addition of 32 hybrid machines and four new empty container handlers.
There are five cranes ready to enter and negotiations are underway to finalize the delivery of the first one as soon as possible, Pauwels stated. The design of the new main access building has also been completed and everything is ready to start the works, he said. At the same time, he highlighted the implementation of the Navis operating system, after three years of preparation.
Pauwels indicated that they are aiming for a port that is connected not only digitally but also physically, with the hope that each arrival of the ONE Strength to Montevideo will be a reminder of the collective responsibility to guarantee Uruguay’s connectivity and its foreign trade.
