China Classification Society (CCS) announced the completion of the major conversion project that transformed the 82,000 DWT bulk carrier Guang Qi De Er Ta into a 3,607 TEU container ship. The vessel was delivered on June 10, 2026 at Zhoushan Xinya Shipyard Co., Ltd., following a six-month modernization process that began in January.

The project involved extensive structural modifications to the hull, a complete redesign of the cargo hold arrangement, and the installation of a new container lashing system, all executed under the highest industry standards of precision and regulatory compliance.

The CCS team addressed multiple common industry challenges, including large block modifications, high-precision structural alignment, and coordinated system adaptation. It also ensured full implementation of recently enacted regulatory requirements, all within a compressed six-month timeline and without concessions in safety and quality.

The successful delivery of this conversion fully demonstrates CCS’s strong technical capability, rigorous quality management system, and efficient, timely service. The project also provides valuable, proven, and replicable experience for future large-scale conversions.

The initiative has received broad international recognition. Various maritime publications, including TradeWinds, have highlighted this conversion as part of a growing trend of projects transforming bulk carriers into container ships, driven by solid fundamentals in the container market and by strategic investment initiatives of Chinese shipowners.

CCS said it maintains its commitment to supporting innovative conversion and shipbuilding projects with world-class technical services. The organization will continue strengthening its inspection capabilities, digital technologies, and regulatory expertise to support its global partners amid ongoing changes in energy and maritime markets.
