More than 100 vessels were hit between November 2023 and December 2024
Athens – Greece will send a rescue vessel to the Red Sea to assist in maritime incidents and protect seafarers and global navigation, the Shipping Minister stated on Thursday, following this month’s attacks by Yemen’s Houthi militants on two Greek ships. Two Liberian-flagged cargo ships managed by Greek companies, the Magic Seas and the Eternity C, sank off Yemen after repeated attacks by the Iran-aligned militant group. The attacks on the two ships marked the resumption of Houthi offensives against shipping, having struck more than 100 vessels between November 2023 and December 2024 in what they described as a show of solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza war. Shipping Minister Vassilis Kikilias stated that the rescue vessel—named Giant and provided by the Hellenic Tug Owners Association—”will support, protect, and assist Greek-owned ships and Greek seafarers.
