Recently, Huisman and Dongfang Wind Power signed a contract for the delivery of an integrated, modular 30-ton submarine cable laying system. This system is suitable for deployment on various vessel types (including Dongfang Wind Power’s newly built service operation vessels and offshore construction vessels at VARD shipyard). This marks Huisman’s first dedicated submarine cable laying system, developed leveraging the company’s extensive experience and expertise in the deepwater pipelay market.

The new cable laying system stands out for its high flexibility and rapid mobilization capability. It can be adapted to Dongfang Wind Power’s existing and newly built offshore construction vessels, inter-array and export cable laying, as well as cable repair operations for Dongfang Wind Power’s fleet, ensuring efficient compatibility. A key innovation is Huisman’s Smart Quadrant Handling System, which eliminates the need for cranes to deploy quadrants overboard. During repair operations, this quadrant system can also function as a joint handling arm, reducing reliance on vessel lifting equipment.

The system will be delivered as a single, integrated unit with quick-connect interfaces, allowing rapid mobilization of various configurations tailored to vessel types and operational requirements. This reduces mobilization costs, welding and hot work, and commissioning time during project initiation.

During the development of this solution, Huisman collaborated closely with ESD, a specialist in cable laying operations. The partnership, established in 2023, combines ESD’s operational expertise with Huisman’s recognized strength in offshore equipment design and manufacturing.

Mr. Chen Bolin, CEO of Dongfang Wind Power, stated: “We are delighted to order this pioneering modular, dedicated submarine cable laying system for our growing fleet. We believe the flexibility to deploy integrated, customized equipment groups onto our commissioning service vessels and offshore construction vessels in a short timeframe will create significant value for customers and ensure the availability of tailored, top-tier cable laying solutions to tackle complex environmental challenges in Taiwan, China, and beyond.”

Timon Ligterink, Commercial Director of Huisman Asia Pacific, said: “We are honored to support our key customer Dongfang Wind Power in advancing the next phase of its submarine cable laying endeavors. With this modular system, we have introduced a unique solution that combines operational flexibility and efficiency, helping Dongfang Wind Power fulfill its commitment to delivering reliable and cost-effective services to the offshore wind industry.”

Previously, the two parties signed a Letter of Intent at the end of 2023, when Dongfang Wind Power ordered a 3,000-ton cable carousel designed by Huisman, scheduled for delivery by the end of 2027.

Key features of Huisman’s submarine cable laying system:
– 2 × 15-ton tensioners
– Minimum bending radius of 5 meters
– 50-ton A&R winch
– Suitable for cables with diameters ranging from 50 mm to 500 mm
– Integrated quadrant handling system, eliminating the need for cranes to deploy quadrants overboard
– Configurable for inter-array and export cable laying as well as cable repair operations
– Quick-connect interfaces for rapid mobilization, eliminating hot work or grillage installation.
